What are runes?
Runes originate from early Germanic writing systems, used not only for communication but as carriers of meaning and intent.
Today, they are chosen less for language and more for what they represent — ideas, values, and personal significance.
Futhorc and Futhark
Not all runes come from the same tradition.
The runes most commonly recognised today belong to two related systems:
- Elder Futhark — used across early Germanic cultures (c. 2nd–8th century)
- Anglo-Saxon Futhorc — an expanded system used in England (from around the 5th century onward)
While they share origins, the symbols and meanings evolved over time and region.
In practice, modern use often draws from both traditions. What matters most is not strict historical reconstruction, but choosing symbols with clear and intentional meaning.
Choosing the right rune
The meaning behind the symbol matters more than the symbol itself.
When selecting a rune:
- Start with what you want the piece to represent
- Keep it simple — clarity is stronger than complexity
- Consider the context (commitment, identity, protection, transition)
- Avoid choosing purely for appearance
A well-chosen single rune often carries more weight than several combined without purpose.
Strength & resilience
- Uruz — raw strength, endurance, physical and inner power
- Thurisaz — force, protection, confronting challenge
- Algiz — protection, defence, awareness
These are often chosen for grounding, protection, and personal fortitude.
Journey & transformation
- Raidō — journey, direction, movement through life
- Eihwaz — resilience, endurance through change
- Dagaz — breakthrough, clarity, new beginnings
These speak to transition, growth, and moving forward with intent.
Commitment & legacy
- Gebo — gift, partnership, exchange between equals
- Ethel – heritage, inheritance, belonging
- Wunjo — joy, harmony, fulfilment
Often chosen for relationships, family, and long-term meaning.
Combining runes
Runes can be combined, but meaning shifts depending on placement and intention.
